KBTC launched on Sep 25, 1961 is a PBS affiliate that broadcasts in Seattle, Washington and is owned by Bates Technical College. The transmitter of the channel is located on 35th Street in northwest Tacoma with studios maintained on the college’s central campus on South 19th Street in Tacoma. It (studio building) was acquired from KSTW: Ch 11. KBTC also owns a fulltime satellite KCKA transmitting from Crego Hill. LP translators K41KT-D and K24IC-D in Gray River and Bellingham also transmit the service in different areas of US and Canada. It is also available on Comcast Cable in Seattle and other parts of Southwestern Washington.

KBTC went on air on Sep 25, 1961 as KTPS-TV and was owned by Tacoma Public Schools. It at its onset operating on Ch 62 moved to Ch 28 in 1982. Tacoma Public Schools was the original owner of the service. Sister KCKA was launched at the same time and the duo were taken over by Bates in 1992 under which the calls were changed to KBTC on Oct 12, 1992. It switched to digital transmission on June 12, 2009. On May 15, 2010 translator K24IC-D was launched while TVW was added to lineup on Dec 6, 2010. A low power transmitter was added to the system on June 19, 2012. NHK joined he channel on its Sub-Chanel 28.2 on Jan 26, 2016. The translator K24IC-D suffered outage on Nov 7, 2017 but thankfully resumed operations on Nov 11, 2017.
Programming
Ch 28 broadcasts public affairs program Northwest Now; the program bagged Emmy Award in summers of 2013. Full Focus in a half-hourly documentary show aired by the station. South Sound Business Report is a locally produced business program that focuses on business. You can watch educational programming, news and public affairs content online.
