History
WCVE started broadcasting in 1961 under the ownership of Thomas Boushalland and a group of community members to broadcast educational programming. Sister WCVW-TV signed on air in 1967 as Richmond became maiden community station to get a double in area while being only the 8th in the state to do so. The amount of instructional programming was also doubled for schools in Central Virginia. Both sisters after 40 years are still active.
Commonwealth Broadcasting in 1974 became the owner of WNVT and formed WNVC in 1981 to serve the Northern Virginia audiences with educational programming. The two channels are still active to serve the schools with educational programs in English and other languages. This was followed by WHTJ which went on air in 1989. A radio and studios complex with a number of studios was inaugurated in 1991. Both WCVW and WCVE became 24-hour channels in the fall of 2006. Identical logos were adopted by the service in 2008. The three sisters then went digital on March 30, 2009.
Programming
WCVE broadcasts American Public Television and PBS shows and also produces its own local programming. Virginia Currents is among the notable locally produced programs of the station. Inside-Out hosted by Terri Allard is produced by sister WHTJ.
