History
KVIA went on air Sep 1, 1956 as KILT and would broadcast on VHF Ch 13 under the ownership of Gordon McLendon Investment Corporation. The third station airing in the El Paso market after KTSM and KROD. McClendon released the channel to Joseph Harris in March 1957 and changed its calls to KELP-TV. In Jan 1966, it was acquired by John B. Walton Jr. Its originally operated from central El Paso at 5430 Delta Drive. On Oct 16, 1979 the callsign was changed to KVIO under the new ownership of Stanley Marsh 3 who took over the channel in Feb 1976. It swapped its channel position with PBS-affiliated KCOS on July 10, 1981 and started broadcasting on Ch 7. However, it didn’t affect the extent of coverage as the two stations shared same antenna. The change was implemented to supply KVIA with a stronger channel position as compared to KDBC and KTSM, respectively linked with CBS and NBC.
News-Press & Gazette Company became the new owner of the Ch 7 in 1995. It until 2006 would serve as the flagship asset of the company when KRDO-TV became part of the Gazette family. Upon the merger of the UPN and The WB, it became The CW affiliate on March 7, 2006. It started broadcasting in High Definition on Jan 11, 2017 and added Ion Television on its sub-channel 7.3 in Jan 2018.
