History

The channel 38 went on air as an independent service on March 25, 1984 in New Orleans after the launch of its sister WGNO which hit the waves in Oct 1967. It aired general entertainment programs including movies, cartoons, religious content, drama series and more. TVX Broadcast Group became the owner of WNOL in 1985. It became first commercial television in New Orleans market to offer stereo broadcasts in July 1985. WNOL alongside other TVX channel signed Fox affiliation on Oct 6, 1986.

Qwest Broadcasting became the new of the WNOL in 1989. Besides Fox’s regular lineup programs it continued to broadcast drama series, movies, cartoons and other general entertainment schedule. WNOL signed The WB network affiliation in 1996; the network was already available on the WGNO since its launch in Jan 1995.

Tribune broadcasting which owned WGNO and had a minority stake in The WB penned an LMA to operate WNOL in 1996. The company bought the Ch 38 outright in 2000 when Qwest submerged into it. The move initiated the first duopoly in New Orleans market. The transmitter facilities of both WGNO and WNOL were demolished by Hurricane Katrina on Aug 29, 2005. WNOL switched affiliation to The CW network on Sep 18, 2006. Tribune aborted the sale of the channel to Sinclair on Aug 9, 2018 after previously announcing the agreement on May 8, 2017.

Nexstar on Dec 3, 2018 announced to acquire Tribune in a cash and debt transaction and hence became the owner of the station after approval of Federal Communications Commission and completion of deal on Sep 16 and Sep 19, 2019. Syndicated programs produced by the channel include Family Guy, Jerry Springer, Modern Family, How I Met Your Mother and Seinfeld.
