History
Front Range Educational Media Corporation founded by a small group of Investors in 1977 requested FCC for a license for VHF Ch 12. It was the second frequency for noncommercial educational use, following KRMA’s pursuit for Ch 6 which was assigned in Jan 1956. Federal Communications Commission licensed FREMCO in 1979 and the channel hit the waves on Feb 22, 1980. The service was launched from a garage in Broomfield. The Ch 12 slot was initially reserved for University of Colorado at Boulder before being handed over to FREMCO. In the later part of 80s, KBDI’s transmitter was relocated to a broadcast tower on Squaw Mountain. The station has the highest full power transmitting antenna in US. The studio facilities of the channel were shifted to a building on North Federal Boulevard in 1989 but again relocated it to its current position on Welton Street in 1994; the rented building in use for the studios was purchased by FREMCO in 2006.
In the late 90s when the Educational service started to build a chain of LP rebroadcasters and its carriage via cable, the call letters were dropped and was branded as Colorado Public Television: CPT12 which was ultimately incorporated as a fulltime brand name in 2010. The calls are never mentioned since then except for the FCC-required station identifications. The branding also overtook the identity of its parent which reemerged as Colorado Public Television, Inc.
KBDI signed a multimedia partnership with CBS O&O KCNC in 2004 for the production of Colorado Decides; the show features political analysis, debates, political analysis and much more. It is also a member of PDP: Programs Differentiation Plan sponsored by PBS by which it clears on 25% of the regular PBS network schedule.
