History

KARD first went on air on Aug 19, 1967 as KUZN under the original ownership of Howard E. Griffith named after its sister radio station KUZN radio. Griffith already had ownership over KFAZ which went on air in 1953 and became silent in the following year. On Jan 12, 1968, the channel ceased its operations but was released to Northeast Louisiana Broadcasting Corporation.

Channel 39 returned to air on Aug 31, 1970 as KYAY. It would host off-network programs, westerns, movies, cartoons, movies and other programs produced by CBS and ABC and not carried by KNOE and KTVE including The Mod Squad, The Merv Griffin Show, The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, The Lawrence Welk Show, The Girl and others. Calls were again changed in 1974 and it became KLAA while also shifting to Ch 14 as an NBC affiliate. On Dec 6, 1981, channel 14 became ABC affiliate. It changed its calls to KARD on Dec 6, 1982. Woods communications acquired the station in 1984 and relocated it transmitter to Caldwell Parish, Louisiana.

Upon the launch of the upstart network Fox, it became a secondary Fox affiliate in 1986. Petracom released KARD to Quorum Broadcasting in 1998 and the company eventually submerged in Nexstar in 2003. Piedmont Television took control of the channel 14 via LMA in 2002. KTVE was released to Mission Broadcasting on Jan 16, 2008 and duopoly created with KARD ended and began the Nexstar-owned duopoly.
