History

KBMT originally used Ch 31 slot since its commencement of operations on May 9, 1954 as the first station in the Golden Triangle. It was owned by Television Broadcasters, Inc. whose stockholders include R.C. Reed and H.D. Williams. Initially an ABC, DuMont and NBC service, the channel also carried CBS content before the launch of KFDM in April 1955 which would replace it as the new network affiliate. The channel went off air on Aug 1, 1956.

R.C. Reed the applied for the alternative location of the channel 12 for the KBMT which Federal Communications Commission approved on June 18, 1961. The original transmission facility of the station was located on Sabine Pass south of Port Arthur before moving to Mauriceville in the early 60s to get rid off KSLA’s interference. Cowles Broadcasting in 1965 became the new owner of the service before selling it to H&C Communications which would release it to McKinnon Broadcasting in 1991. It added NBC as its new network on digital sub-channel 12.2 on Jan 1, 2009. The move came after KBTV realigned itself with Fox. The analog signal of the channel was shutdown on June 12, 2009. Texas Telecasting Inc. freed the service to London Broadcasting in Aug 2009. Gannet Broadcasting became the new owner of the service on July 8, 2014 after agreeing on terms with London on May 14, 2014. Gannett had already purchased two LP digital stations to compliment the signal of the former London Broadcasting asset. Following the split of Gannets print and broadcasting operations it moved under the ownership of Tegna Inc. on June 29, 2015. Latest news can be watched online.
