History
KLTV went on air on Oct 14, 1954 under the original ownership of Lucille Buford. It since its inception has been serving as an ABC affiliate despite initially carrying NBC and CBS as primary broadcast partners. The channel for a short period of time carried DuMont Television Network on a secondary basis until 1955. The original studios of KLTV are located on Texas Loop 323 on the east side of Tyler. FCC merged Nacogdoches and Lufkin markets in 1964 and soon after that KTRE was purchased by Buford and converted it into a semi-satellite of KLTV.
The channel had to drop CBS affiliation in Sep 1984 when KLMG-TV now affiliated with FOX and known as KFXK took over. It maintained secondary affiliation with NBC until KETK replaced it in March 1987. Buford Television had ownership over KTRE and KLTV until when it released its assets to Civic Communications. The channel shifted to Texas Loop 323 in 1996. Civic merged with Cosmos Broadcasting to shift under the umbrella of Liberty Corporation in 2000. In 2006 Liberty was purchased by Raycom Media. The station celebrated its 50th anniversary in Oct 2004. Raycom then went under the label of Gray Television on June 25, 2018; the deal was approved by Federal Communications Commission on Dec 20, 2018 and the merger concluded on Jan 2, 2019.
