History
KNIC-DT dates back to Mach 1991 when it was launched as K17BY, an LP service dedicated to serve San Antonio under the original ownership of Clear Channel Communications. It received the construction permit on March 23, 1998 but the channel was released to Nicolas Communications in March 1991 where it became KNIC-LP. In Nov 2001, Nicolas sold its station to Univision Communications and in the same period its license was upgraded to Class A; the sale consummated in Jan 2002 as the channel became a charter affiliate of Univision Secondary network, TeleFutura, a forerunner of UniMás which was established on Jan 7, 2013. The company the applied to relocate the channel to UHF 17.
Federal Communications Commission gave their approval in Feb 2003 after which KNIC-TV was launched on July 13, 2005. In the aftermath of the move to UHF Ch 17, KNIC-CA had to change its slot or get silent outright. As a result, KNIC-CA temporarily switched to Ch 34 under special temporary authorization before getting shut down on Sep 28, 2006. The television became a digital service on June 12, 2009 after dropping its analog signal as it flash-cut its digital signal to UHF 18.
