History
Owned by Tidewater Teleradio, the station launched on Sep 1, 1957; Tidwater also owned WAVY 1350 AM radio. The original ABC affiliate later became NBC affiliate because of the already NBC linked radio sister. LIN Broadcasting purchased the station. It relocated to its current studios located on Wavy Street in downtown Portsmouth in April 1989. Before that it would broadcast from a former farmers market located in downtown Portsmouth. After WVBT signed affiliation with WB in 1995, WAVY entered a local marketing agreement to operate the channel. LIN TV then signed an affiliation agreement with Fox in Nov 1995. It beat out affiliation WTVZ to sign affiliation with Fox in Nov 1995. LIN TV acquired WTVZ in Feb 2002. In 2001 WAVY became the maiden station the market to air on digital signal.
Media General on March 21, 2014 revealed its plans to acquire LIN Media; LIN merged with Media General on Dec 19, 2014. The company then announced to acquire Meredith Corporation for another merger on Sep 8, 2015. However, the sale couldn’t complete as Nexstar Broadcasting Group came forward to acquire Media General; the deal completed on Jan 17, 2017. Nexstar then announced to release the duopoly assets WGNT and WTKR to E.W. Scripps Company on March 20, 2019. W14DY-D and W18EG-D are the translators of the WAVY.
