History

WCAV became the first CBS affiliate in the area when it was launched on Aug 15, 2004; it would set a competition with WVIR-TV. The channel 19 slot was considered to till the area with a WB service. The market was working without WB affiliation since WUPV joined UPN in 1997. It then swapped the channel with WTVR in 2007. However, after turning digital, Gray launched WVAW-LP as an ABC affiliate on Channel 16; it was formerly an LP translator of WHSV based in Harrisonburg. In early 2005 two sisters were joined by WAHU-CA, a Fox affiliate that later became WAHU-CD to broadcast on Ch 27 on UHF. All the three sisters since 2006 serve as the flagship stations for the sports events of University of Virginia. The simulcast of the WCAV on June 17, 2013 transitioned into HD. It added Ion TV on its Ch 19.4 on Oct 1, 2018.

On March 4, 2019 Gray Television announced to sale WVAW-LD and WCAVC to Lockwood Broadcast Group.
