History
WDJT went on air on Nov 10, 1988 as an independent service and was owned by John Torres and Debra Jackson. After the death of Jackson, the station was sold to Weigel Broadcasting. At its onset the service was branded as Classic 58; the programming consisted of sitcoms, studio films, game shows and general entertainment programs. The studios of WDJT were located on the top floor of the Marc Plaza Hotel while transmitter was installed on the top roof of the hotel which was also used by WMKE-LP and WVTV. As an independent service, WDJT felt heat to compete against WCGV and WVTV. The first-run and off-network content was mostly picked up by WCGV, WVTV and other network affiliates in the Milwaukee market. In Feb 1992, the station covered criminal trial of serial killer Jeffery Dahmer originally sourced by WITI: Ch 6.
Affiliation with CBS
On Dec 11, 1994, WDJT became the 6th service in Milwaukee to get affiliated with CBS. The maiden program to be hosted by the channel included CBS News Sunday Morning. It replaced WITI as network’s Milwaukee’s affiliate. It in Aug 2008 became the maiden station in the city to offer a local program in HD without the support of Milwaukee Public Television. JDT in Aug 2014 became the longstanding CBS affiliate as it completed 19 years and 8.5 months with the network. Logo imaging was changed on Oct 30, 2014.
Programming
It presently produces 30.5 hours of local news-bulletins with 5.5 hours on weekdays and 1.5 hours Sat and 2.5 hrs on Sundays. It is the lowest news output by a by a Big Four affiliate. The Public affairs program Eye to Eye and a Spanish language news bulletins are also aired by the station. Syndicated programs broadcasted by the WDJT include Madam Secretary, Inside Edition, NCIS: New Orleans, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy!, and Dr. Phil.
