History

WFIE was issued a construction permit by FCC on June 10, 1953 and it officially on aired on Nov 15, 1993 using UHF Ch 62. It was Indiana’s six channel and was jointly held by Oscar Fine, Isadore and Jesse. WFIE was the second television in the Tri-State but first to be airing form Evansville. It always had its studio facilities based across the Ohio River in Henderson. Since its inception, the channel has maintained its status as an NBC linked service while having secondary affiliations with DuMont and ABC. WFIE lost both networks in Aug 1956 when WTVW took over the ABC affiliation while DuMont was closed. It is the only channel in Evansville market to have never changed its primary affiliate. It is also the longest serving NBC affiliate in the state of Indiana. Also in 1956, WFIE became the first service in area to offer color broadcasts.

The Oscar Fine family in 1956 released the channel to George Norton family on Kentucky. The channel shifted under the umbrella of Nortons’ broadcasting holdings which was eventually renamed as Orion Broadcasting. In Aug 1961, following the approval of Federal Communications Commission, WFIE took the ch 14 slot. It became the first television service in Evansville to air live and locally produced colored programs from March 10, 1966. Orion submerged into Cosmos Broadcasting Corporation in Oct 1981. The latter was a division of Liberty Corporation.

WFIE in 1985 became the first television in the market to carry broadcasts in Stereo. The company after stepping out of the Insurance business shifted WFIE under the parent Liberty Corporation. It became a digital service via ch 46 in May 2002. Liberty dissolved into Raycom Media on Feb 1, 2006. The latter shifted under the corporate umbrella of Gray Television after an agreement on June 25, 2018; the cash and stock merger transaction was worth USD 3.6 billion. The deal consummated on Jan 2, 2019.
