History
WISH-TV first hit the waves on July 1, 1954 under the original ownership of C. Bruce McConnell. It was the third television channel to air in Indianapolis market following WFBM and WTTV which were established in May 1949 and Nov 1949. It originally started as a primary ABC affiliate having secondary linkage with NBC and DuMont Television Network. Its first studios were that of WISH radio.
CBS affiliate
McConnell released his asset to Indiana Broadcasting Company in 1956. J.H. Whitney & Company division persuaded CBS to allow channel 8 an affiliation and drop WFBM. It became one of the first television in the Indianapolis market to install a videotape machine in 1956. Indiana Broadcasting was reincorporated as Corinthian Broadcasting Corporation in 1957. WISH-TV was the flagship service of the Corinthian. It remained as an NTA Film Network affiliate from 1958 to 1959.
Corinthian submerged into Dun & Bradstreet in 1971 with the latter selling the entire broadcasting business to Belo Corporation in Feb 1984. Due to ownership limits rule mandated by FCC, Belo had to release WANE and WISH to LIN Broadcasting in March 1984. It relocated its transmitter to a new tower in Augusta section of Indianapolis in 1995. It aired on its digital signal on Dec 17, 1998 on Ch 9 slot. The CW affiliate broadcasted its maiden program in HD on Dec 19, 1998.
Paramount Stations Group on Feb 10, 2005 sold WNDY to LIN helping it create a duopoly with WISH. Media General on March 21, 2014 purchased LIN Media assets for USD 1.6bn in a merger deal which consummated on Dec 19, 2014 after the approval of Federal Communications Commission. Nexstar Broadcasting acquired Media General in Jan 2017 and emerged as the new owner of the station.
Sale to Circle City Broadcasting
Circle City Broadcasting announced its plan to buy WISH on April 8, 2019 and eventually became the new owner on Sep 19, 2019.
