Early History
The station went on air on March 19, 1989 as WCCL and was originally an independent television service with General entertainment format. Resigning to financial issues, it ceased broadcasting on May 23, 1990. Finn Broadcasting three years later acquired it and put it back on air on May 25, 1994. It then carried HSN Network content. ON Aug 31, 1998, the station changed its callsign to WPXL-TV and on the same day it became a charter affiliate of Pax TV (later Ion Television).
After the landfall caused by Hurricane Katrina in early Sep 2005, WPXL signed an agreement with WDSU as the transmitter of the latter was severely damaged after the flooding. It would then simulcast WDSU on Ch 6. The Worship Network was also added along with the WNOL and WGNO signals on its digital sub-channels in New Orleans market. In March 2008, the station added Qubo and Ion Life on its digital sub-channels 49.2 and 49.3. Through Qubo it would carry non-Ion kid’s content and lifestyle programming via Ion Life. WPXL shut down its analog signal on June 12, 2009 and made switched to digital transmission. However, it continued to broadcast on its pre-transition UHF Ch 50 slot.
Audiences can watch shows like Blue Bloods, NCIS: Los Angeles, Law & Order: SVU, Chicago P.D, Criminal Minds and more online. Follow the station on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Here is the website: https://iontelevision.com/
