WVUE-DT launched on Nov 1, 1953 is a Fox affiliate operating in New Orleans, Louisiana. Owned by Gray Television, the studios of the channel are located on Jefferson Davis Parkway in the city’s Gert Town section with a secondary setup located within the Benson Tower in downtown New Orleans. Transmitter of the station is installed on Magistrate Street in Chalmette. Cox Communications is the cable carrier of the Fox affiliate.

Early History

WJMR-TV was established by Supreme Broadcasting Co., on air on Nov 1, 1953 and was the second channel to hit the waves in New Orleans market. It was also third television to launch in Louisiana. Originally active on UHF Ch 61, it switched to Ch 20 on July 20, 1955. At its onset, the channel was a primary CBS affiliate but also shared select content from ABC network. On Jan 13, 1959, it switched to VHF ch 13 and changed its callsign to WVUE on Feb 1, 1959. To get rid of interference of WLOX, it moved to Ch 12 on Sep 6, 1962. Columbia Pictures released the station to Gaylord Broadcasting Company in 1977. It became a 24-hour service in June 1986. WVUE was sold to Burnham Broadcasting Company.

SF Broadcasting became the new owner of the channel on Aug 25, 1994 making WVUE a Fox affiliate on Jan 1, 1996 as it dropped the 43-year affiliation with ABC. In March 1996, Silver King Communications became the new owner of the station after the company acquired Savoy Pictures and merged its assets in a cash and stock transaction. The former released its assets to Emmis Communications for USD 307mn on April 1m 1998.

Louisiana Media Company became the new owner of the channel on July 14, 2008; the deal was initially charted out on May 5, 2008 and concluded on July 18, 2008. A secondary studio facility was inaugurated by Tom Benson in Aug 2012. Raycom emerged as the new owner of the channel on Aug 8, 2017 but announced its merger with Gray Television on June 25, 2018 which was approved by FCC on Dec 20, 2018 and consummated on Jan 2, 2019.

WVUE currently airs 57 hours of local news-bulletins each week with 10 hours each weekday and 3.5 hours each on Sat and Sun.
